WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - The Bethel Lutheran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has been a staple of Williston since the first resident entered in 1951. This year, officials say they intend on building a new, modernized location out at Williston Square.

Joan Tofte has worked in many different positions since she started more than 23 years ago.

“It is very rewarding. I think we have a very friendly set of people who work here,” said Tofte.

As the Bethel building approaches 75 years, Tofte said there’s a definite need for a new facility.

“It’s time for Bethel, Williston and this area to have something more modern and up-to-date,” said Tofte.

Plans for a new Bethel were first made public in 2022 when Williston Mayor Howard Klug announced a land purchase west of Walmart. Bethel CEO and Administrator Belinda Moen said the facility will hold 90 skilled care and 10 basic care beds, providing a better standard of living for those who need it.

“If we start to lose our elders, it’s going to affect the city of Williston not only by the 200 healthcare workers we would lose, but we could also run the risk of their families leaving Williston,” said Moen.

Fundraising efforts are underway for the $72 million project. Moen said they are looking for $28 million. She added that they will also look into applying for loan funding made available from the state for long-term care centers.

Moen said they hope to break ground at Williston Square sometime later this year.
