BISMARCK, N.D. - A republican candidate for U.S. Senate sent sexually explicit text messages to a police officer posing as a prostitute according to court documents.

Paul Schaffner was arrested in a prostitution sting in May of 2017. Evidence released by the court shows Schaffner was responding to an ad on trying to solicit a woman for sex.

Text messages between Shaffner and police show he was interested in purchasing a half hour worth of time for $120 and inquired about bringing sex toys to the encounter.

Shaffner announced on Monday he would run for Heidi Heitkamp's Senate seat this year.

We reached out to Schaffner for comment but he did not immediately return our calls.
