WILLISTON, N.D. (KFYR) - The Western Area Water Supply Authority, which supplies clean water to thousands of people and businesses in five counties, is asking for emergency assistance from the state.

The WAWSA board of directors said there are significant problems with the water intake at the treatment plant near Williston.

While the water is still clear, sand and sediment at the intake has reduced capacity by 50%. And if it’s not fixed, it could have trouble meeting needs in Burke, Divide, McKenzie, Mountrail and Williams counties.

“We need the State to step in to secure regulatory and funding assistance to replace or fix this crucially important infrastructure and prevent future water supply and treatment issues in the region,” Barke said.

The board is asking Governor Armstrong to issue an emergency declaration to address the issue.
