North Dakota representative says process creates confusion during election cycle
NORTH DAKOTA (KFYR) - U.S. Rep. Julie Fedorchak said she opposes redistricting in the middle of election cycles as states across the country redraw maps ahead of state-level elections.
Eight states have adopted new maps so far. Six could boost Republicans, and two could favor Democrats.
Fedorchak spoke about redistricting this week as the process continues to affect who controls state legislatures.
“Whoever’s in charge after November, I don’t think it’s going to be a huge majority on either side,” Fedorchak said. “I think it’s going to continue to see a narrow majority.”
“And I’m not a huge fan of this whole redistricting in the middle of the election cycles,” she said. “I think it just creates a lot of confusion. And I would like to just let things settle out and run through this election cycle.”
A recent Supreme Court ruling altered the Voting Rights Act. The decision could lead to even more new maps.
Louisiana postponed its primary election to redraw maps. Other states are considering the same.
Primary elections take place across the country this spring and summer. North Dakota’s primary election day is June 9.
