BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - North Dakota’s oil comes from the area referred to as the Williston Basin, which covers much of North Dakota and extends into Canada, South Dakota and Montana.

The Bakken Formation covers 93 million acres, 8 million of which are in North Dakota.

The Williston Basin is most known for producing oil and gas. It also produces coal, helium and potash, which is a potassium-rich mineral mostly used as a fertilizer.
