New ice facility in Williston to support growing hockey, skating community
WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - More than 400 kids ages five and up are part of the Williston Basin Skating Club, giving many a chance to learn and play hockey. With only two ice rinks in town, schedules are very packed, with some groups practicing as late as 9:30 p.m.
“We do have a lot of kids and a lot of good people who are helping the facility get better and the program get better,” said Brad Federenko with the club.
Between practices, events and upcoming high school hockey games, it’s apparent there’s a need for more ice. That’s what led Williston and Williams County leaders to pledge $22 million for a new facility at the Williston Square Development. Williston Mayor Howard Klug earlier this year said it was made possible after taxpayers voted to extend the one percent sales tax in 2024.
The new facility will add three ice rinks, one of which will be year-round. JE Dunn will build the site around an old airport hangar. For the skating club, its members see it as an opportunity to be even better.
“It’s going to take some time, but with a little bit of effort with the volunteers we have, I think it’s going to be a really good project for all of us,” said Federenko.
Officials with Williston Parks and Recreation say they’re hoping the groundbreaking takes place this spring, with completion in 2028.
