WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - North Dakota Lieutenant Governor Michelle Strinden and several state lawmakers were in Williston to learn about how the school district is implementing a unique educational model.

There are 20 districts and 45 schools in North Dakota using the BARR model. It stands for Building Assets and Reducing Risks. It’s a specific framework district officials say helps build relationships between teachers and students.

It also helps teachers and parents see how their students are progressing beyond academics.

Strinden and the lawmakers visited several Williston schools to see how BARR works and how it can support education.

“I think BARR has helped our schools. We are collaborating better. We’re collaborating with meaningful discussions. We are creating a school family by increasing our attendance and decreasing our office referrals, and we’re increasing our family engagement, which is really great and what BARR is all about,” said Tonya Brenner, principal at McVay Elementary.

In a statement, Strinden applauded the district for its dedication to excellence.

“Williston Public Schools has made a commitment to improving student outcomes by investing in the BARR framework. Today we witnessed the care and devotion of educators in the community working to support the success of all students,” said Strinden.
