BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) says 11 people have been hospitalized following an increase in West Nile Virus in recent weeks.

HHS says that as of Aug. 14, they have confirmed cases in 26 people, nine of whom have had nervous system complications.

HHS says people should take extra precautions against mosquito bites, since mosquitoes can carry the virus.

HHS says West Nile virus activity peaks in August, and while most people are asymptomatic, common symptoms include fever, headache, rash and body and joint aches.

Precautions listed on the N.D. HHS website include using insect repellent with ingredients like DEET, wearing protective clothing outdoors, and mowing your lawn.

Thirty-eight mosquito pools and three birds have also tested positive.
