BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Elon Musk coined the term DOGE as a way to streamline the federal government and save taxpayer dollars. North Dakota lawmakers created their own DOGE committee and met for the first time.

The purpose of the Legislative Task Force on Government Efficiency is to review state department budgets and programs.

This month, they met with the Departments of Health and Human Services, Commerce and IT.

Lawmakers said it’s not just about reducing the workforce, but making sure taxpayers are getting the most value from their dollars.

“I hate inefficiencies. It would be very irritating for me if I am working in a highly inefficient agency or program. I’d want them to be able to be reassured that we’re not here just to cut headcount, but we want to make sure we’re getting our dollar’s worth,” said Rep. Nathan Toman, Chairman of the task force.

The task force is required to file a report every year detailing possible cost-saving measures and recommended legislation. They’re planning to meet again with more departments next month.
