BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - It could soon be tougher to start a recall election against local politicians.

Members of the North Dakota House passed Senate Bill 2269, increasing the number of sponsors needed from five to 15 and the signature threshold from 25% to 35%. Supporters say it’s needed due to minuscule turnout during the primary election.

“Raising the threshold will provide better assurance of adequate representation,” said Rep. Donald Longmuir, R-Stanley.

The bill also states that you can not recall an individual twice during a single term and that an election is not needed if the recalled member is the only person running.

The Senate will need to vote again on this bill.
