Williston High School students pour concrete as part of class
WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Students taking construction classes at Williston High School spend most of their time creating actual structures. Right now they’re in the process of building a storage shed, getting a firsthand look at what a career in that field would be like.
For them, the classroom is this construction site.
They’re pouring concrete and creating a base for a storage shed.
“It was pretty tough burning the forearms a little bit, but it’s fun,” said Matthew Schmit, senior.
The students handle most of the work from beginning to end.
“I helped with the permit process, and then we did the framing and the bubble,” said Malia Burns, senior.
No matter their role, it’s something they’re excited to do.
“I love it; it was great,” said Carlos Rubio, senior.
“It’s a good experience for you to learn how to do it in the future if you want to get into this type of stuff,” said Emiliano Morales, junior.
These are the types of projects construction teacher and licensed contractor Marc Davis loves to assign.
“These guys are going out there and being the next carpenters, plumbers, and electricians out in the field. What more hands-on can you get with this stuff,” said Davis.
Whether it be their future career path or a hobby, these students are excited to have this as part of their school schedule.
“It’s definitely awesome to have these skills,” said Burns.
Davis said he will use the completed shed to add more storage for his classes. With another step completed, these students are building something they can be proud of.
Davis and the students will be framing and sheathing the shed next. Davis said the goal is to have the shed wrapped and the roof enclosed by the end of the school year.
