WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Two years ago, Casey Heller was arrested after police said he cut an associate’s hand and slashed a 15-year-old’s throat during a ride home from a bar. This week, he stands trial for attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Williams County State’s Attorney Jaakan Williams says a retelling of events during the trial will result in a guilty verdict.

“This really is not a complicated case whatsoever. The facts and the testimony that you are going to hear, that we will be presenting to you as evidence, speak for themselves,” said Williams.

Heller’s attorney, Jesse Walstad, does not dispute what happened but claims medical issues caused Heller to be unaware of his surroundings and actions during the incident.

“Because Casey was detached from reality and conciseness, he could not have formed the criminal intent required to convict him of these offenses,” said Walstad.

Williams argues evidence showing Heller’s growing agitation during a discussion in the car and Heller walking home after the incident shows he was in control of his body.

Witnesses, family members and medical experts will take the stand over the next four days with District Court Judge Benjamen Johnson presiding.

Heller faces up to 25 years if convicted of both charges.
