Montanans, international students help propel Williston State College’s fall enrollment
WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Williston State College is recording another strong fall semester with the highest percentage increase in the North Dakota University System.
The college headcount this fall is 1,058. That’s a 16% increase compared to last year. The second-highest gain was Mayville State University at 8.2%.
Eight of the 11 institutions reported increases for the fall semester.
Williston State College President Bernell Hirning said every metric had a double-digit increase.
“Classes are full, the dorms are overfilled, and the apartment buildings are full. It’s an exciting day for Williston State College,” said Hirning.
Recruiting efforts in northeast Montana have been one of the keys to raising the population.
“It’s close to home and it’s affordable,” said Hannah Anderson of Sidney, Mont.
International students are also flocking to Williston State. The campus saw a 36% increase, posting the highest number on record.
“The school is really diverse. For North Dakota, it’s really good,” said Freedom Leon, Trinidad and Tobago.
There’s a lot of competition as Williston looks to recuit students against larger schools in both North Dakota and Montana. Hirning said on-site visits and low tuition costs are giving them an advantage.
“The word is out now that if you come to Williston State College, you’re not going to just get a great education, but you’re also getting a lot of help in paying for college,” said Hirning.
Down the road, Hirning said he wants to expand marketing and outreach efforts beyond the border, getting into southern Canada.
Hirning added he expects the trend to continue as Williston State opens a healthcare training facility in late 2025 and adds a cross-country program next year.
