The Army Corps of Engineers has approved the Dakota Access pipeline permit, which has upset the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Now, the tribe is suing the Corps for issuing the permits.
The tribe says it fears a spill could contaminate drinking water on its reservation, which straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
"We have environment rights we have cultural rights that we feel are being violated by this permit," said Dave Archambault II, Standing Rock Sioux tribal chairman.
The tribe also says, in court documents, that the project threatens sacred sites and violates federal laws, including the National Historic Preservation Act.
