Sheriff’s dept. releases findings on deputy-involved shooting

MANDAN, N.D. (KFYR) – The Morton County Sheriff’s Office has released the outcome of a deputy-involved shooting from February after an incident where a man is suspected of setting a house on fire and shooting a gun at law enforcement.
Prosecutors charged Correy Davis with three felonies in connection with the incident at a rural home.
Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier wrote in an email to Your News Leader: “In the gunfire exchange, Davis was struck by a deputy’s bullet. BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) completed the investigation, and the investigation was then reviewed by the Burleigh County States Attorney. The deputy was cleared and justified in responding with deadly force.”
No members of law enforcement were injured during the incident, and Davis spent some time in a hospital because he was shot.
Davis has pleaded not guilty to the following charges in Morton County: attempted murder, attempted aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment against a peace officer. He is currently in the Burleigh/Morton Detention Center.
Prosecutors accuse Davis of illegally entering the home of a woman he knows on Feb. 19 and then setting it on fire the next day. The home burned to the ground.
Court records indicate Davis violated several restraining orders involving the people who lived in the house.
The state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigates police shootings and reports their findings to the law enforcement agency involved. It is then up to the law enforcement agency to make those findings public. Your News Leader contacted the Morton County Sheriff about the results of the above investigation, and Sheriff Kirchmeier responded to the request.
The court has set a trial date for Davis on Nov. 3.
