BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - There are only about 22 days left until the tax deadline. If you’re turning to social media for tips, you may want to reconsider.

If you’re on social media, you may be aware of influencers sharing tax tips on exemptions and ways to save money this filing season.

However, the North Dakota Tax Commissioner’s Office warns against following the advice you see on these platforms. It may not be coming from knowledgeable experts.

“Don’t always trust social media in terms of, ‘Well, this is how this works,’ or ‘This is an exemption’ or ‘You don’t have to do a certain part of filing your taxes.’ Always work with a preparer or call our office,” said North Dakota Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus.

The office doesn’t blame taxpayers for seeking help on their taxes. However, they encourage using credible sources.

“Go to the official sites, the dot-gov sites, to get your contact information to make sure the number is correct and it’s legitimate,” said Kroshus.

If something goes wrong on your tax return, don’t fret, as Kroshus said his office deals with mistakes all the time, and they can be fixed.

“If they receive bad advice, they can always go back in, file an amended return, but they still have to take a few extra steps to get the information corrected if it was presented wrong, inaccurately in the first place,” said Kroshus.

When it comes to your taxes, credible information beats viral information.
