WASHINGTON (KFYR) - The U.S. Senate has authorized a final confirmation for Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler to serve as the assistant secretary of education.

An official confirmation could take place as early as next week.

If confirmed, Baesler would oversee federal policy for K-12 schools.

Baesler has been the North Dakota state superintendent since 2013.

correction: The original story stated the Senate had confirmed Baesler as U.S. assistant secretary of state. The Department of Public Instruction released a correction to their press release, indicating that this is not the case.
