Haying underway in McKenzie County

MCKENZIE COUNTY, N.D. (KUMV) - In McKenzie County, haying season is moving right along.

Producers said it is shaping up to be an average to slightly above average season. Drier weather early in the summer allowed for good progress, but recent rain and humidity have slowed things down.

“It’s not a bad year for haying. I’d say it’s either average or slightly above average. We made good progress when it was drier, but the recent rains have definitely slowed things down a bit. Yields have not been bad,” explained Ryan Odenbach, McKenzie County extension agent.

Despite the delays, yields have been steady, and pest issues like grasshoppers are minimal. Producers are now watching for more rain or sudden dry spells, which could impact second cuttings.
