WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Anglers and shooters teamed up for a good cause in Williston this weekend. What started in 2016 as a small fundraiser has grown into a huge fundraiser for an area wrestling club.

Now in its ninth year, the Blast and Cast Tournament spans two days of outdoor competition, clay pigeon shooting on Friday and fishing on Saturday, all to raise funds for the Coyote Wrestling Club.

“This is one of our two big fundraisers for the year,” said Pace Bates, the club’s fundraising coordinator. “The cost of a season is about double what we make off entry fees, so we make up the difference through events like this. We’ve been pretty proud of our ability to hold our fees steady, even through inflation.”

With over 32 teams this year, the Blast and Cast bring together families and friends.

“I like being a part of the community, hanging out, and chatting with everybody,” said Daniel Garcia, a competitor. “This year I have my brother on my team, it’s really great — I’m just glad my brother isn’t shooting against me, he’s a really good shot.”

Family is at the heart of the event, with several multi-generational teams, including one with a grandpa, son and grandson competing together.

“You see families come out—mom, dad, and son. Whether they wrestle or not, it’s cool seeing everyone support it,” Bates said.

And while the competition is real, it’s the community and camaraderie that keep people coming back year after year.

“It feels really nice when you can donate to the community you’re a part of and have a good time at the same time. I love it,” said one participant.

For the Coyote Wrestling Club, the main goal is growth, both on and off the mat.

“We want to grow the club, and bringing awareness through this tournament helps us do that. I know of multiple people who’ve done the event and now have kids wrestling with us,” said Bates.

From casting lines to firing shots, the tournament blends outdoor fun with a mission to support local youth wrestling.

Bates said the Coyote Wrestling Club is thankful for all the community support and especially the sponsors who help make the tournament and wrestling season possible.
