MCKENZIE, N.D. (KFYR) - Beef prices have jumped 12% from a year ago, and they might be going up again.

“Ranching is a hectic business. Always a lot of stress. But a very rewarding lifestyle as well,” said Jerry Doan, a rancher in McKenzie at Black Leg Ranch.

He is the fourth generation to till the land and raise cattle.

Doan has seen the rise in beef prices and knows the source of that pain: it’s the high price of cattle at market. Some of the reasons for that include: the U.S. cattle herd is at the lowest point since 1951, harsh winters, drought and high demand for beef products. This rancher has his own economic factors weighing against him.

“Feed prices have gone up some, but the problem is inflation, operating costs, parts and repairs, those have gone through the ceiling,” said Doan.

Some ranchers have given up, and even though demand remains high, cattle ranching is significantly less profitable in this day and age.

“I get calls from folks who are getting out now, and prices are good. There is quite a demand of conversion of grassland to cropland,” said Doan.

Doan said he is fortunate and is doing well for now. It also helps that his kids and grandchildren are involved with the ranch and will help it grow for generations.

Doan also said that holistic management, preparation and planning can be beneficial to struggling ranchers.
