Williston’s ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ event aims to spread domestic violence and sexual assault awareness
WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - The Williston Family Crisis Shelter is challenging people to swap out their walking shoes for high heels on April 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Raymond Family Community Center.
This is a part of a ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ event, challenging men to walk a mile in high-heeled shoes.
It plays off the saying: ‘You can’t understand another person’s challenges until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.’
Many Williston entities are stepping up to accept the challenge, including the Williston Fire Department and Police Department.
Stephanie Crotts, the event coordinator, said that by stepping into those shoes, you are helping spread awareness of the resources available for sexual assault and domestic violence victims.
“Women come here and it is an oilfield town, so a lot of women come here and don’t have families, they don’t know anybody so they have no clue this shelter is here. So this will help get the word out, the more we talk about it, the more we are open about it, the more we can help some of these women that have no idea that there is help here,” said Crotts.
Everyone is encouraged to sign up for the walk; there will be several activities to follow. All the funds raised from this event will go to the Williston Family Crisis Shelter.
