BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced more than $1 billion in housing grants for American Indian tribes, including nearly $30 million for tribes in North Dakota.
HUD says the funds can be used to support affordable housing projects. That can include development, modernizing existing housing, safety and crime prevention, or housing services.
The funding is awarded as a grant and, according to HUD’s website, it is the single largest source of Indian housing assistance.
Tribes in North Dakota set to receive funding include:
- Spirit Lake Tribe ($4.1 million)
- Standing Rock Sioux Tribe ($7.5 million)
- Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold ($5.1 million)
- Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians ($12.9 million)
