Nuclear triad upgrades for Minot Air Force Base discussed in Senate committee hearing
MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - Upgrades that will impact Minot Air Force Base in the years to come were the focus of some talks during a Senate committee hearing this week.
The committee met to discuss the nomination of Elbridge Colby for Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.
The position would be vital to the modernization of the nuclear triad, including in Minot.
The hearing sparked discussion between Senator Kevin Cramer and Colby.
Cramer posed the question to Colby on the importance of the nuclear triad as well as airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).
The senator acknowledged the Sentinel program has faced challenges and asked Colby if he would commit to the task.
“I do commit to providing the support for the ICBM and the Triad and the land-based leg, and the Sentinel program as well. Obviously, there are concerns about the health of the program, so if confirmed, that would be a priority. But certainly, you have my commitment,” said Colby.
The Sentinel ICBM will replace the Minuteman III.
A final vote for Colby’s nomination has not been cast yet.
