BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - A nearly 45-mile stretch of Highway 52 is scheduled for a makeover.

About $20 million will be awarded to the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) to restore a portion of the highway in the Drake, Fessenden and surrounding areas.

Assistant Planning Asset Management Division Engineer Jack Smith with NDDOT said they’ll also be installing some upgrades. These include new lanes for accelerating, slowing down and turning. He said the award will let them tackle projects they’ve had planned for a while.

“It’s much more expensive to fix a road after it starts to deteriorate than it is to get on it and do the work earlier rather than later,” Smith said.

He said construction won’t start right now, but will probably last through the spring or fall when it does start. That money is being awarded through the Freight Reliability and Preservation Project.
