Pro’s Pointers 7: Best uses for a bottom bouncer
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Bob Meter invented the bottom bouncer, which ended up revolutionizing Walleye fishing years ago. It’s become a go-to in the tackle box for fishers in North Dakota.
“The heaviest bottom bouncer I carry in my boat is two ounces, and I found over the years giving my guide clients a larger weight helps them maintain proper bottom contact instead of letting that sinker drag on the bottom way behind the boat, leading to more snags,” Candle said. “Now, two ounces may seem excessive to you, but I’ve found over the years that a hungry Walleye doesn’t care how far behind the boat your presentation is.”
“Whether you’re in eight feet of water on top of a flooded road in Devils Lake, or in 28 feet off water at the tip of your favorite point in Lake Sakakawea, using a heavier bottom bouncer makes it easier to maintain the proper bottom contact keeping your presentation and the strike zone longer, leading to more fish catches,” Candle said. “It’s that simple.”
Next week, Candle talks about the importance of finding the right depth for your crankbaits.
