Midgets Hockey Heads to State for 2nd Time in School's History

It's the first trip to state for the Dickinson hockey program in 16 years, and just the second in Midgets history.

DHS will play Grand Forks Red River in the opening round. The Roughriders are the No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll, and the heavy favorite heading into the state tournament.

"I'd say defensive zone, positioning and just straight up out working our opponent. They're the best team in the state but hard work pays off so if we just work hard good things will happen," said Michael McChesney, Midgets senior.

"First of all I'd say defensive zone. You can't have any odd-man rushes. Just keep them to the outside and no shots from the middle of the ice," said Tate Martel, Midgets senior.

The Midgets are a young team. McChesney and Martel are the only two seniors on the team. McChesney is not only Dickinson's leading scorer, but he is the No. 2 scorer in the state.

Dickinson and Grand Forks Red River play Thursday at 5:30 p.m. MDT at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.
