BISMARCK, N.D. - Youth shooters from across North Dakota took aim Saturday, hoping to advance further at the Smallbone Rifleman Open Regional Championship.
The Bismarck/Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association has one of the few indoor 50 yard shooting ranges in the country. That's according to Tom Thompson, who has been shooting since he was a teenager.
He says if participants continue the sport in college, some are able to receive NCAA scholarships. He says the sport helps with much more than just hand-eye coordination.
"For self discipline, learning self discipline, because it takes a lot to be able to control yourself to shoot well," said Tom Thompson, Junior Program Director.
Thompson says this is a sport that people can continue to shoot for life. More matches will be held on Sunday, the top three will receive medals and cash awards.
