The Marauders are not the only football team with a Thursday start. The University of North Dakota is playing at home tonight.
The Fighting Hawks will be playing their first game of the year in Grand Forks for the first time since 2013. Mississippi Valley State is the opponent, and the Delta Devils have a new head coach.
"First games are always a little bit of an unknown because you don't really know how teams are going to change or adjust,” says head coach of the Fighting Hawks, Bubba Schweigert. “For us, it's really keeping the focus on UND that's what we've been preaching to our team. We have to execute on offense, defense and special teams."
UND only won three games last year, and their opponent only won twice, and they got destroyed by the NDSU Bison last year. Bubba says there’s some comfort in being at home, but Thursday does offer a different twist.
"We're going to be going to class the day before the game and we're going to be going to class the day of the game so that's a little bit different for us that's an adjustment but everything is how you handle it and being a mature team. We have a lot of young guys that are going to have to be able to handle this to get ready."
The Fighting Hawks start the season Thursday.
