University of Mary senior Jaiden Schuette and Dennis Newell were honored as the 2018 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women’s Central Region Cross Country Athlete of the Year and Head Coach of the Year.
Schuette was the top runner this season for the 4th ranked Marauders and posted the top time overall in four out of the five meets.
According to the USTFCCCA release, "Schuette won the individual Central Regional crown with a 20:52.5 performance. The Bismarck, North Dakota, native captured the program's fourth consecutive individual title and paced the team to its third straight team championship. The senior also placed first at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate and has wins in four of her five races this season."
Newell lead the Marauders to an undefeated season and it is the fourth straight year Newell has led UMary to the NCAA championships.
According to the USTFCCCA release, "Newell, in his 13th year with the program, oversaw his team winning the Central Regionals with a 29-point performance. It was the third straight regional title for the group who also had the individual champion in Schuette. The Marauders placed five athletes in the top-14 at the meet and also captured the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Champions earlier this season."
Additionally, all seven Marauders on the UMary Central region championship team earned All-Region recognition.
The Marauders end their season at the NCAA national championships on Saturday, Dec. 1, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
