BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Mary women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the division in the NSIC Pre-Season poll. Right now, the women are second in the north.
With high expectations for this team this year, Head Coach, Rick Neumann has noticed that these girls are hungry to win, and prove that they can be better than what was predicted.
"I think talent one through 16. You know, just every practice we've had has been competitive, and scrimmage situations have been close, and if you don't bring your A-game, someone is climbing that ladder, and they're looking like the next practice, they're going to take your minutes. So I think just the overall depth of the players one through 16 in our program has made our practices extremely competitive," said Neumann.
And it’s not just in practice where they excel. They’re 6-2 overall, and do not have a double-digit loss. For the players, they think that could be because of the make-up of the team.
"In the past, we've always been young, ever since I've been here it's just been, 'oh we're young we're young,' and this year it's, 'we have experience,' but we have fresh faces, new ideas, new ideas, new athletes on our team, so it's a mix. That's one of the new things about us, is we're a mix of old and young, so it's a good thing though," said Cassie Askvig, junior forward.
The women are on a holiday break until next Sunday, when they travel up to Minot to face the Beavers on the 30th.
