Right now, high schools are on their Christmas break, but once teams get back on the basketball court, it's all business. The St. Mary's Saints are hungry to make a run in the state tournament again this year after the girls took third last season. Taylor Gerving is one of three seniors on the team and she is in this week's Sports Spotlight.
For Gerving, she almost had no choice but to be on the court.
"Shot around with my dad when I was probably five years old," said Gerving.
But, it ended up working out.
"He was my coach until eighth grade until I entered high school, and so we always share that special bond of basketball together," said Gerving.
That connection on the court grew into much more.
In the winter, she's busy with basketball, it's all about volleyball in the fall, and in the spring, she puts on that black and gold uniform with the Legacy Sabers on the softball field. But picking just one sport as her favorite, is not so easy.
"Probably, well it's always between basketball and volleyball. Right now it's basketball because I'm in basketball, but I love all the sports I play equally," said Gerving.
When it comes to basketball, she's playing in her fourth varsity season for the Saints and Gerving has had to overcome some hurdles on the hardwood.
Shannon Copas, St. Mary's Girls Basketball Coach said, "She's gone through a number of injuries and has always battled back, and has always worked hard. A teammate that you want to bat for, per-se. And just somebody who really really works hard at what she wants to do."
And what she wants to do is continue her education at the University of Mary.
"I plan to attend UMary, going into their physical therapy program. Sports are still undecided yet, but we'll see what the future brings me," said Gerving
Uncertainty about her future is alright, but something she is certain about is taking the Saints back to the Super-A.
"Going to the state tournament, taking third place, so that's just my goal this year as well, is to lead the team into going to the state tournament again, and proving what we proved last year once again," said Gerving
Gerving still has a few more months to try and make that happen.
Gerving and the Saints will be back on the hardwood this Saturday to host Williston.
