If you watch Mandan athletics, Lakyn Darras is a name you hear often. In volleyball, Darras just earned first team All-State honors. Last winter, Lakyn was all-conference in basketball as a junior, plus she plays softball in the spring.

"It’s definitely hard I mean you got to prioritize your school and your sports but it’s fun you learn a lot in sports and then especially getting into the future," said Darras.

Basketball has always been her favorite sport.

"It has been, I think, it's because I've played longer ever since I was little. I've just had that love for the game, and I'm excited to continue it, I definitely am," said Darras.

Darras takes over the role of senior leader on the basketball court and her ability to stretch the floor from the four spot will make it difficult on the Braves opponents.

"I think her length is something that makes her so unique, and then just the ability to play both ends of the floor and to work inside out because of her height and her lankiness; she's really good at finishing around the hoop. But, you cannot sleep on her if she steps out behind that three point line. You have to have a hand in her face or she's going to knock it down over you," said Mandan girls basketball coach Abby Thomas.

Darras says she has always admired the women's basketball program at the University of Mary so making the commitment on signing day was an easy decision.

"I've always like gone to camps there when I was little and just that they're close to home and you just go to those game when you're little, too. And, it was just really cool to be able to be at that next level and that step where like you can be in that role that you always looked up to its just exciting," said Darras.

Her high school coach knows she will have no problem transitioning to college basketball.

"I think she's going to do great you know her size definitely and her versatility of being able to play inside out you know sometimes when you're kind of a tall person in High School sometimes that doesn't necessarily translate to the next level but her ability to play inside and out she's going to be a weapon on the floor," said Thomas.

Darras and the Mandan Braves will start their season at home against the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs this Friday.
