Sports Spotlight: Carly Palmer & Briana Rittenbach

BISMARCK, N.D. - The high school fall sports season ends next week with the state volleyball tournament. This week, football and swimming comes to a close. The Century Patriots are the West Region swimming and diving champs, and now they’re preparing for state.

It's a quick three months. Roughly 90 days of competing, will come to an end this weekend. For Carly Palmer and Briana Rittenbach, all the hard work their senior year, leads up to this. Head Coach of the Patriots, Kathy Aspaas says, "this is going to be their last chance to really make an impression on some of the younger swimmers and kind of leave their legacy here at the pool."

For Carly, the West Region produced a very nice honor, Palmer is the senior athlete of the year.

"It was definitely a goal for me to get senior athlete of the year,” says Palmer. “I wasn't 100 percent expecting it, but I knew that I had worked for that, and I've been working for it this summer and off-season. It's definitely good to get recognition, but that's not what it's all about and that's not why I put in all the work. I put in all the work for my team, and just so we can be able to win state championships.

Headed to the State Meet this weekend, Carly says her goal is to get, as she calls it, her lifetime best.

As for Briana, she wants a another win in the medley relay, something Century accomplished two years ago. "It would be really nice to get that again, and also re-get my 100 backstroke record from sophomore year as well. Get that best time state record in there, that would be awesome."

With six seniors leading this Patriots team, swimming with them will be a time she always remembers. "It's definitely great to see each other grow and just grow together as friends and everything, it's super awesome.” Rittenbach adds, “you want the best for your friends, and seeing them all excited for their goals and stuff too."

Coach Aspaas says that, "as far as it being the end of the season, it's just the beginning of a new chapter for them, both of them are planning on swimming college swimming, and so that will be fun to see and follow them as they progress through their college years as well."

Carly has committed to swim at Boise State, while Briana has narrowed her college choice down to two. The state swimming and diving meet is in West Fargo on Friday and Saturday.
