Sabre Dogs bring baseball back to Minot

MINOT, N.D. – We are a few months away from the first pitch for Minot's new summer league hardball team, and the excitement is already amping up.

The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs are the newest team in the Expedition league

The Sabre Dog's front office is tasked with the challenge of creating a team from the ground up. General manager Darrell Handelsman comes to Minot with more than 20 years of experience with summer college baseball.

"It's supposed to mimic Minor league baseball, and give the players that minor league experience," said Handelsman.

The team will play with wooden bats and travel for about a week at a time to mimic the life of minor leaguers. The players will get the exposure and competition they need to advance to the professional level.

"I like to tell people almost on a nightly basis you will see a future major leaguer playing that night. He might not be paying for use but he may be playing for the other team we are playing that night. But the quality of baseball is such that these guys are right on the verge of starting their professional careers," said Handelsman.

From a kids area to a VIP party deck the Sabre Dog games will offer something for the whole community.

Handelsman says "If you like fun in any form. You don't have to like baseball, you don't even have to like sports. But if you like having a good time and you like fun, there's something for everybody. What I would say is check it out and I guarantee you, once you come for one game you will want to come back for more."

Opening day for the Sabre Dogs is June 1st. They are looking for host family to house the players over the summer contact if interested. Season tickets are on sale, to purchase them call 701-839-9100 or visit
