B.J. Etzold did not coach basketball last winter and one season was enough. Wednesday, the Bismarck High and Jamestown College graduate was named the head girls coach at St.Mary's.
"I had talked with Coach Dekok about maybe helping with the boys and we had that going a little bit. And then when Shannon (Copas) decided to step down it was one of those where I had to discern a little but about whether of not I'd want to coach girls basketball, which I hadn't done, and put my name in the hat, and I guess I was just really excited about the thing he'd been doing the last 4-5 years and just seeing the group of girls that's coming back and what they're building on," said Etzold.
Etzold says with a young family, the earlier games are a benefit because they'll be able to watch.
Etzold has head coaching experience at Holy Angels in Minnesota, but he also coached for the Bismarck Demons, Jamestown Blue Jays, St.Mary's Saints and Hazen Bison in North Dakota.
He comes from a coaching family. His dad, Bud, worked at places like Jamestown College, UMary and Dickinson State.
