DICKINSON, N.D. - While most colleges in North Dakota have already begun fall camp, Dickinson State won’t hit the field until Sunday, Aug. 12. Now just like every team, every year, DSU has a slightly different roster.
They graduated a number of players from last year, which left gaps to fill on both the offense and the defense.
Head Coach Pete Stanton says while they’ll be filling those spots, it’s good to have returning talent back in the line-up.
"We returned four out of five starters on the offensive line, so those are two key areas. Offensively though we're losing most of our receiving core, we have a lot of holes to fill there. And then defensively, you know on the front end, opposite offensively, the defensive line we lost four really good players there, so we're going to have to step up because most of our back-end guys and our linebackers and secondary guys as you mentioned, Cain Boschee, Jay Liggins, have been All-American in their career, they both returned for their senior year so it's nice to have those two guys back," said Stanton.
While the Blue Hawks welcome back a number of players, they have welcomed new coaches to the football staff as well.
"It's been good this summer,” Stanton adds. “It was a tough transition in the spring because we lost Jace as he goes to the University of Montana, and then Nick is going to Bowman and at the same time I wasn't able to be too involved with the practices. So, it was a tough transition, but the new staff that have come in, you know Coach Thier on the defensive side, good coaches and Coach McCarvel and Coach McGuire on the offensive side. Good coaches and they're going to fit in really well with our program and what we want to do, and those guys have really hit it off this summer, and so we got back, and really looking forward to working with these guys."
The Blue Hawks open up fall camp this Sunday, and their season gets going on September 1 as they host the University of Jamestown.
