YCC suspect pleaded not guilty, case heads to trial

BISMARCK, N.D. - One of the four teenagers accused of assaulting correctional officers last year pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

Seventeen-year-old Elijah Barse pleaded not guilty after waving his preliminary hearing.

The affidavit says Barse, 17-year-old Gavin Johnson, 17-year-old Starson Buckles, and 17-year-old Julian Wolf are accused of assaulting multiple staff members at the Youth Correctional Center during a riot in January 2018.

Court documents say the four suspects tried to escape YCC by taking a guard to the ground with a choke hold, punching and kicking others and taking keys from another.

Barse is charged in adult court with ten counts, including eight felonies.

He’s charged with aggravated assault, four counts of simple assault on a peace officer, terrorizing, conspiracy to commit escape, preventing arrest, physical obstruction of government function and disorderly conduct.

The judge scheduled the two day trial for September 17 and 18.

Buckles pleaded guilty to 13 counts in connection to this case last week. Wolf pleaded guilty of six counts in this case.

Johnson’s trial is on July 10.
