Williams County employee accused of stealing $38,000 in bond money
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation says 48-year-old Krystal Johnson pleaded not guilty to theft of property, and has a jury trial scheduled on May 11.
Investigators say Johnson was suspended for poor work performance in April of 2019. At that time, fellow employees sorted through her desk and found 48 open cash bond envelopes.
Court documents show Johnson admitted during an interview that she was having financial issues, and began taking money in 2017 to help pay bills for herself, her children and her grandchildren.
She told investigators that she planned on paying it back, and did pay $750 at one point, but her paychecks could not cover the total cost of $38,546.80, according to court documents.
Johnson faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
