Tribal leaders react to burning of historic church

NEW TOWN, N.D. – Tribal leaders are reacting after a fire destroyed a nearly century-old church on the Fort Berthold Reservation earlier this week.

The Monday-morning blaze tore through the Memorial Congregational Church, just between Parshall and White Shield.

The church, built in 1926, is a total loss.

No one was hurt, though authorities do have a person in custody.

Mark Fox, the chairman of the MHA Nation, offered this statement on the loss of the church:

The destruction of the historic Memorial Congregational Church was devastating for our people. Our nation mourns with all those who held a special place in their hearts for this sacred place. The Memorial Congregational Church has always been and will remain an important part of our nation's history.
