Travel agents say not to cancel trips to Dominican Republic
It's still safe to travel to the Dominican Republic, even with the recent reported tourist deaths. That's according to a local travel consultant.
Patty Beyer with Northland Travel says to remember a couple things: don't go out late by yourself, travel in groups, don't over drink or take your eyes off your drinks. She recommends booking at a certified hotel or resort if you're going out of the country.
“We have hotels and resorts that have been certified. People go there, they check them out ahead of time, so you know they're going to be a good place to go,” Beyer said.
Beyer says more than six million tourists visited the Dominican last year, and while the recent deaths are tragic, they make up a very small percentage of visitors to the island. She says these types of incidents do happen in countries across the world, including the U.S.
