A local independent assisted living center is working to better the lives of the veterans who live there.

Dawn Anderson, the executive director of The Wellington in Minot, signed a statement of support Tuesday establishing a partnership with the ND Cares Coalition.

The coalition is a support network that strives to educate members of communities about the potential needs and challenges faced by those who have served.

The Wellington is the first assisted living community to partner with ND Cares.

The coalition hopes to give veteran residents more resources and care.

"We do believe there is a need within the long term care communities. It provides them a little bit more resources and connect them with the resources I should say. And we're able to provide various types of training for staff here at the Wellington to help them better understand military community as a whole," said Darcie Handt, the executive director of ND Cares.

Service members passed out commemorative coins to honor the veteran residents.

The Wellington staff is going to be trained on suicide prevention and military culture.
