Teens charged as adults after riot at Mandan Youth Correctional Center

MANDAN, N.D. - Warrants have been issued for three teens accused of assaulting correctional officers and trying to escape from the Youth Correctional Center in Mandan.

Court documents say State Highway Patrol Troopers responded to the Correctional Center around 8 p.m. on Jan. 28 for a report of an active riot.

When the trooper arrived he found four teens trying to escape from the facility, he used a bean bag gun on the teens and was able to handcuff them.

Documents say when the trooper viewed video surveillance of how the riot started he saw 17-year-old Gavin Johnson, 17-year-old, Starson Buckles and 17-year-old Elijah Barse assault multiple officers.

The teens are accused of taking one guard to the ground with a choke hold, punching and kicking others and taking keys from another.

Johnson has been charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, three counts of simple assault on a correctional officer, interference with telephone during emergency call, terrorizing, preventing arrest or discharge of other duties, conspiracy to commit escape and physical obstruction of government function.

Buckles has been charged with aggravated assault, physical obstruction of government function, two counts of disorderly conduct, simple assault, four counts of simple assault on a correctional officer

Two counts of terrorizing, conspiracy to commit escape, preventing arrest or discharge of other duties.

Barse has been charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, four counts of simple assault on a correctional officer, terrorizing, conspiracy to commit escape, preventing arrest or discharge of other duties, physical obstruction of government function.

All three teens have been charged in adult court.
