RUGBY, N.D. – Another wave of Shopko store closings hits North Dakota, as the total number grows to nine in the Peace Garden State. Two of those stores are in Rugby and Rolla.
Folks knew as early as Wednesday night that Shopko Hometown would be closing its doors as one in a handful of stores that will be closing across the Peace Garden State after Shopko corporate announced they'd be closing multiple across the Great Lakes and Midwest region.
A couple weeks ago, they announced they were filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and many say that is the reason they've decided to close their doors.
I was speaking to residents here who say this is a vital part of the community and now they have to take their business outside of town to get some of the same goods they could get here. That includes clothes, toys, books, a lot of home goods and cleaning supplies. They have a grocery store in town and a Family Dollar, but there's simply not much of a way that that can make up for the service this store provides.
As it stands, the Shopko Hometown in Stanley that we've reported on in recent months will remain open for now.
