SAWYER, N.D. - A new restaurant in Sawyer has a special meaning behind its name.

Michael Popham has a surprise for someone special in his life.

"She is not expecting it at all. She has no idea,” Popham said

Wednesday, Popham revealed his new restaurant will be named Gramma Jo’s Eatery, after “Gramma Jo”. She's the mother of his significant other, and encouraged him to reach his dreams of owning his own business.

"She keeps me going and said I can do it when everything else failed," Popham said.

Gramma Jo said she couldn’t believe the surprise.

"It blows me away like the kids say today. I tried to name the place myself and out of all places it wasn't that," Joanne Goerndt, also referred to as “Gramma Jo,” said.

Popham says it feels good to finally see it all come together.

"It is unreal. It still hasn't hit me that this is happening," Popham said.

Showing the love behind a namesake.

Gramma Jo's started serving food Monday and will have its grand opening Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. at 5 Main Street in Sawyer, N.D. They will feature DJ'ing karaoke and Valentine's Day specials.
