MINOT, N.D. - There are more than 8,000 teachers in North Dakota. Five have been recognized as North Dakota Teach of the Year Finalists, and one of those finalist teaches in Minot.

"In recognition for your outstanding achievements and teaching and dedicated service to our students Sara Medalen,” said Kirsten Baesler North Dakota State School Superintendent.

In front of all the students at Sunnyside Elementary, Medalen was recognized as one of the five finalist for North Dakota Teacher of the year.

"It is just a huge honor and I am very humbled to be a finalist,” said Medalen.

"Her commitment and her absolute genuine love for her students and the profession of teaching. Making sure that each and every one of her students feels special and knows they are special,” said Baesler.

The assembly was for her, but Medalen still made sure to inspire the students.

"Shine like the stars you are,” said Medalen.

It wouldn't be an Sunnyside assembly without a dance party.

She says she wouldn't have been able to do what she has done without the students and staff at Sunnyside.

"Teaching at Sunnyside School has made a huge impact in my life and it is because of all of my coworkers. Every single one of them. From the kitchen staff to the custodians, to the paras, to the teachers to, Mrs. Cook and the students,” said Medalen.
