DICKINSON, N.D. - UPDATE: 09/02/2019 at approximately 12:15 PM Dickinson Police Department: Dickinson Police Officers responded to the 1500 block of Abraham Parkway in reference to 911 report of multiple gunshots.

The address in question is located on the east side of Dickinson in an area consisting of a number of townhomes.

The 911 caller was a resident of the area and believed around from the suspected gunshots passed through the common wall of her townhome.

Upon arrival in the area DPD Officers were quickly able to confirm gunshots had indeed been fired. Officers quickly evacuated the other unrelated townhomes and residences in the immediate area. An outer perimeter was established and a reverse 9-1-1 page was activated directing remaining residents in the area to shelter in place. The gunshots were believed to have originated from the NICHOLAS BARNES residence. The South West Tactical Team (SWTT) was activated and responded establishing an inner perimeter. Arrest and search warrants were obtained while crisis negotiators attempted to contact the suspect through multiple means to include public address audio system.

A request for additional asset support (ROOK, armored Bobcat) was made of West Dakota SWAT in Bismarck. While awaiting the arrival of the ROOK, the suspect unexpectedly opened his garage door, diving out from under the opening garage door armed with two handguns. Although armed during this unorthodox exit from his residence it was believed that BARNES was surrendering to authorities. A very disciplined and strategically placed immediate action team of SWTT operators supported by a Bearcat Armored vehicle were able to subdue the suspect immediately when he immerged from beneath the garage door.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. NICHOLAS D. BARNES (39yoa) of Dickinson was taken into custody and transported to the South West Multi County Correctional Center (SWMCCC) where was lodged on charges of C-Felony Reckless Endangerment. BARNES was believed to be suffering from a psychiatric episode causing his extremely irrational behavior. No one was injured during this extremely volatile incident.

UPDATE 4:40 PM: According to the Dickinson Police Department Facebook page, one person surrendered and was taken into custody around 3 p.m. MT. They say SWAT is still on the scene clearing the area, and residents will be allowed into the area soon.

Residents are asked to avoid the area.
