BELCOURT, N.D. – A petition has been submitted to the North Dakota Attorney General’s office to audit the Belcourt School District 7.
The petition calls for the district to “be subject to an audit, including performance audit, along with a review of books, records, and financial accounts held by the School Board.”
The petition cites “irregularities” that concern the petitioners.
Turtle Mountain Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure was not one of the petitioners, but he submitted a letter to Gov. Doug Burgum, R-ND, Thursday, signed by him and the other eight members of the Tribal Council, showing support for process and their interest in seeing a financial audit of the board.
“We hold our school districts and our pillars of education at the highest standards, as we do with tribal government and our court system,” said Azure.
It’s unclear at this time whether state leaders are carrying out the audit.
