Pair charged in child sex crime investigation in Velva

VELVA, N.D. – A Velva woman is being held on a $1 million bond at the Heart of America Correctional Center in Rugby on charges she sexually assaulted three minors and recorded the acts.

Prosecutors have charged 31-year-old Katie Heidinger with three counts of gross sexual imposition, as well as possession of certain materials prohibited and promoting an obscene performance by a minor.

According to the criminal affidavit investigators with the sheriff’s office and the North Dakota Highway Patrol were made aware of images and videos depicting child pornography on Heidinger’s cell phone.

Heidinger admitted to investigators she sexually assaulted the victims and took videos or pictures of the acts between August of 2019 and January of 2020.

Investigators say she also admitted to sending pictures to 43-year-old Derrick Walker.

Prosecutors charged Walker with three counts of possession of certain materials prohibited.

A criminal affidavit shows a search warrant revealed multiple images depicting child pornography on Walker’s cell phone.

Heidinger made her initial appearance on the charges in Towner Friday. Her next court appearance has not been set.

She faces the chance of life in prison if convicted on the charges.

Walker made his initial appearance on the charges in Minot Thursday. He remains in custody in the Ward County Jail, and will be arraigned Feb. 14.
