Constant change that comes with living in the middle of oil-country can put some priorities on the back-burner, and can create a difficult environment to live in. A church in Williston saw the need for a community event for women that helps them successfully navigate life in the Bakken.

New Hope Church is hosting their second free Health & Wellness Event next week that focuses on mental, physical, and spiritual health, as well as making connections with others. Event Coordinator Amanda McBride says when moving to a new area, a lot of people have a hard time adjusting, and this event helps women develop a community.

“I think it’s especially important for an area like ours where people are constantly moving in and out, and you may not know anybody. Your best friend may have moved away, you know, so there’s always change going on,” said McBride.

There are eight sessions participants can choose from including General Women’s Nutrition, General Women’s Health, Kickboxing, and a new session that was not at the previous event: self-defense. McBride says she hopes this is just the beginning of participants focusing on their own well-being, and creating a community they can rely on and meet with long after the one-day event ends.

The Health & Wellness Event is at New Hope Church on Sept. 17 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Registration starts at 5 p.m., and it’s open to every woman in Williston and surrounding communities.
