North Dakota’s republican senators Kevin Cramer and John Hoeven are standing behind the president’s actions in northern Syria as long as the Kurdish people left behind are still protected in some way.
Cramer says he's got mixed feelings about the withdrawal and he’s comfortable with where the president stands. Hoeven said it's a balancing act of getting our troops out without destabilizing the region.
President Trump campaigned on getting less involved in the Middle East. This move is creating a lot of skepticism that Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will stick by his promise to leave the Kurdish people alone.
"Syria was supposed to be a short term hit. Just a short term hit and we were supposed to be in and out,” President Trump told reporters on Tuesday about the move.
"They are our allies, they have been our allies. They fought on the front lines in the war against ISIS. They are very good friends and very strong allies. We owe them a great debt and we owe them their protection,” said Cramer.
The president doubled down Tuesday with tweets that the Kurds will be protected and Turkey won't interfere. Hoeven echoed similar feelings, adding any movement in the region is complex.
"We want our troops out of harm’s way as soon as we can get them out but with the proviso that we have to make sure ISIS doesn't regenerate and we have to work with our allies,” said Hoeven.
"We have other troops in other bases in the neighborhood while not in Syria. That particular part of Northern Syria which borders Turkey- you know Turkey has some ambitions as you probably know- so we have tension there,” said Cramer.
